Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) visited the waste transfer station in Al Khor, with the presence of Dr. Soud Khalifa Al-Thani, Director of the Green Development and Environmental Sustainability Department, to review the role of the private sector in achieving the goals of the National Environmental Strategic Plan’s goals. Hassan Malallah, CEO of Global Co., the Station’s operating company, presented the station’s key achievements and future plans.

The Al Khor station is an essential part of Qatar’s waste management infrastructure, with a daily capacity of up to 1,500 tons of waste. The station contributes to sorting, reducing, and efficiently transporting waste to recycling plants, enhancing cooperation between the public and private sectors.

This station is a crucial step towards achieving the national environmental strategy and the circular economy. The waste management station also aims to attract foreign investments, enable clean technologies, and reduce emissions, aligning with Qatar’s goal to close and rehabilitate 100% of unhealthy landfills and increase recycling rates.

Al Khor Station contributes to decarbonizing the waste management sector – responsible globally for approximately 3-5% of emissions – by attracting investments and financing, creating job opportunities, and enhancing regulatory frameworks. This will positively impact manufacturing, food security, infrastructure, and transportation.

A study by the Investment Promotion Agency in Qatar expects the circular economy to generate an additional $17 billion by 2030, along with creating approximately 19,000 new jobs. The Station aims to convert waste to energy, develop renewable energy sources, and enhance smart waste management solutions, supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and protecting the environment in the long term.
